World's Tallest Clock Tower in Makkah (Mecca)

The Makkah Clock Royal Tower will be the second tallest building in the world and the biggest clock tower, standing at 577 meters high it will 59 meters taller than the Taipei Tower in Taiwan but still shorter than the Burj Dubai (or Burj Khalifa) which stands at a huge 828 meters.

The Mecca Clock tower is part of the Abaj Al-Bait (or Al-Bayt) project just 50M in front of the Grand Mosque in Makkah (Mecca), the site that all Muslims must face to pray 5 times per day, their holiest of shrines. The clock tower itself will be used for the call to prayer within the city of Makkah or Mecca.

The Clock will be lit and visible from around 17 kilometers away at night and up to 12 km during the day, the Clock will be six times the size of Big Ben.

If you are an expat working in Saudi Arabia or someone wishing to visit this truly awe inspiring building then be warned, unless you are a Muslim you will be unable to enter the holy city. The roads into this area are dotted with checkpoints to ensure that only the faithful enter. I once got lost trying to navigate past and stopped at the checkpoint into Makkah, I was forced back into my car at gunpoint and sent on my way without directions by these humble, helpful, forgiving people.

Makkah Clock Royal Tower Completion

Well it is now almost the middle of 1012 and the building work is still not complete, previous dates in 2010 and 2011 have all passed and I have not yet heard any firm dates. As with all other projects in the region it has been plagued with many delays and has even had three fires within the towers the latest only being in march of 2011.

They were to have the clock up and running during Ramadan 2010 but failed to do so and things have gone very quiet! The clock itself was finally inaugurated in 2011 finally during Eid.

As soon as I hear any definitive dates I will post them here. Looking forward to the opening party as I am sure it will be huge (if they have one), but unfortunately I will have to watch the video afterwards as I am not Muslim so I will not be able to enter the Holy city.

The Abrj Al-Bait project is one of the world's biggest development projects covering over 1.4 million square meters. The Abrj Al-Bait towers will house a 3000 room hotel complex, most of the rooms overlooking the Haram with views of the holy Kaaba. Construction firms such as Saudi's Bin-Laden group are involved in this massive project.

There are some 500 food and retail outlets within the development to keep most people busy on a minor shopping spree.

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) has long been the time the time standard that we have all set out clocks to, however the Islamic scholars are now stating that as Makkah is the true center of the world we should all move over to "Makkah Time".

So watch this space to see if the worlds tallest clock tower also becomes the time keeper for the whole world!

Is Makkah now just for the Rich?

With the construction of the Makkah Royal Clock Tower reaching completion there are voices being raised about how this development and others within the city are trying to profit from their religion. The rentals within the new mall are claimed to be exorbitant and I know for a fact that the costs of apartments within the clock tower itself are huge compared to any other development in the kingdom.

People are claiming that the divide between rich and poor within the kingdom and the religion is growing due to the government and the developers trying to profit from the annual pilgrimages to this holy city. They fear that these developments will prevent the poorer elements from ever being able to visit!

Great resource. Funnily enough I was involved with trying to secure finance for this project through my business contacts. Lost sight of it after the finance had been secured. Good to see that progress has been made. But I wonder where all this competition to be the highest, tallest, longest, strangest building will end. Perhaps the next one will be the largest single story building in the world, covering an entire country. What a shopping mall that would be for Ramadan!

Thanks for your comments billy, it is a great sight, but I will only ever see it in photographs as I am not a Muslim. They only allow Muslims into Makkah. As to the biggest, they are now planning a "mile high" tower here in Jeddah to be the worlds tallest.

Humagaia, it is a very small world.. I think this project has a $6 billion budget! Not small money that is for sure. They are building whole cities here from the oil money, and to ensure that they have an industrial future after the oil runs out. As to the future, we are looking at a Mile High tower here in Jeddah, work to start soon..

Hey LeanMan, that's a tad big. LOL! Great information on the Clock Tower. Just viewing the pictures alone, it's an impressive size. I'm in America, so measuring things by meters isn't easily translated for me, while reading. But, it's a safe bet to see that it's huge. Thank you. I learned something new today and that I'm grateful for. :)

Thanks for your comments Rookie, It will be the biggest clock tower in the world, many times bigger than Big Ben in London. But then that is what the royals here want, they want to show that they can do anything bigger and better than anywhere else.

The Makkah Clock Royal Tower Fairmont Hotel will be the highest most prestigious hotel here in the Kingdom and probably the world.

Rizky 20 months ago

I'm a muslim, and I hate how Saudi Arabia banned non muslims from entering Mecca. It is actually based on a verse in Quran that said "non believers shouldn't enter Mecca", but the 'non believers' here actually refers to the persecutor of Muslim during the time of Muhammad when muslims are only a bunch of people. Even Muhammad allowed non muslim that has no evil intention to enter Mecca back there in the past! (when he just won a war). Arab people, why do you keep making image of Islam worsen?????

Anyhoo, I don't really dig the design of the clock and the entire building. I think it's horrible, like a monster... but dunno, maybe I'll changed my mind.

LeanMan profile image

LeanMan Hub Author 20 months ago

Hi Rizky, thank you for reading and commenting, maybe one day the Saudi Government will allow access to Mecca for Non-Muslims, but I think it will be way off in the future.

As to the design, I just wish I could see it through more than photos to get a better appreciation of how it looks.

I had visited the site recently and really its a great work, can't deny the mechanics of such a huge clock. For all those who are non-muslims, I think any government of Saudi Arabia will not allow you to enter in the city. So, you have 2 options, either be part of Islam or just wait till they design a virtual tour of it. Mind it, virtual tour is not real...

This is a total suprise to me and I try to keep on all kinds of things, especially news about Islam. I have to say I am very distressed over this. The whole appeal of Mecca is the Kabbah and now they have OVERWHELMED the sacred house with this monster building. The picture from the top of the tower shows this in great perspective.

I am just concerned that the people in power in Saudi Arabia allowed this. Build your big clock anywhere else, but not 50 meters from the Kaabah. I also cant believe this is the only comment with this concern

LeanMan profile image

LeanMan Hub Author 6 months ago

Ahmad, whilst not a Muslim I can sympathize with your concern, if not careful the Makkah Clock Tower and the new malls will become the focus of the attention and awe for pilgrims rather than the Kabbah!

In England, the main cathedral and seat of the Archbishop is in Canterbury, within this city no building is allowed to be built too high to obscure the view of this magnificent cathedral, planning controls ensure that unlike other UK cities the heights of buildings are kept below the height of the cathedral. developments that are allowed have to keep within very strict standards and not detract from the many historical buildings within the city.

It seems to me (and others) that the Saudi Government have gone all out to impress and profit from this and other projects in the city of Makkah with little thought for what is being either destroyed or overshadowed! After all this hotel will not be used by the average pilgrim, the prices charged will be very much aimed at the richest of the visitors to the city.

Visitor 6 months ago

One of the signs of kiamat is that there will be many tall structures.

Muslim 5 months ago

Just came back from Makkah. This towering monstrosity proves saudi self-appointed "royal family" wasting money and space. Visitors who can't afford the exorbitant hotel rates find themselves miles away from the holy mosque and have to walk for miles to & fro 5 times a day! Islam's history and heritage sites are being destroyed and replaced with convention-style money-making hotels and malls. Makkah and Madinah have turned into "tourist" resorts.

I agree with Lean Man. I am a muslim and travelling to Mecca this week. I've been reading and looking at pictures of this clock tower but there is a sticking point.. The tower overshadows the bigger attraction of the holy mosque. In all its grandeur, and world records, lets hope it doesn't. In Medina, the buildings around the are pretty much the same size so not to obscure the view too much of the prophets mosque. Excellent photos and write up though Lean Man.
